Offering a Wide Selection of Homegrown Products
Based in Cohoes, New York, Small Town Gyrl offers high-quality, fresh herbs seasonally for homeowners and businesses. I carry six of the most popular herbs, including:
Basil
This culinary herb has floral anise and clove-like flavor and aroma. It has two main types:
- Sweet or Genoese Basil – most often associated with Mediterranean food like pesto and tomato sauce. This culinary herb pairs well with tomatoes as well as most types of meat and seafood.
- Asian Basil – this has a more distinct anise flavor that is perfect for soups, stews, stir-fries, and curry pastes.
Parsley
This is one of the most common and versatile herbs in Western cooking. It has a light peppery flavor that complements other seasonings. This herb is often used in sauces, salads, and as a garnish for dishes at the end of cooking.
Like Basil, parsley also has two types: flat leaf parsley, which has the best texture and flavor for cooking, and curly parsley, which is perfect for garnish.
Cilantro
Also known as coriander, this culinary herb has a flavor that some people find "soapy," but it's still one of the world's most popular spices. Its bright and refreshing flavor is a staple in most Latin and Asian cuisine.
Chives
This herb adds a flavor similar to onion without the bite. On top of that, its slender, tube-like appearance looks great as a garnish either snipped and sprinkled or laid elegantly across a plate.
I also have purple chive blossoms, which are more pungent and can be a beautiful addition to your salads.
Dill
The feathery leaves of a dill plant add a pleasant anise-like flavor to your seafood, soups, salads, and sauces. Its subtle taste complements food with delicate flavors like fish and shellfish. Fresh dill has a strong scent for up to three days when refrigerated.
Oregano
This pungent herb is primarily found in Mediterranean and Mexican cuisines. It is also one of the few herbs that dry well. When using dried oregano, make sure to add half as you would if it were fresh since its flavor is more concentrated.
